History
West Shore, British Columbia is part of the Western Communities of Victoria and is the fastest growing area on Southern Vancouver Island. The West Shore area is comprised of the communities of Colwood, Highlands, Langford, Metchosin and View Royal. With districts or communities of its own, and each with its own identity, West Shore offers something unique to please everyone. Metchosin is only 20 minutes from Victoria, but it is where nature meets the coastline. It has become well known as a wilderness getaway for hikers and bird watchers. The marshier areas of Metchosin are full of wildlife while the hikers enjoy Albert Head Regional Park. Colwood is a residential community of the West Shore area and is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Victoria. Even though it is primarily residential, the Colwood community is presently experiencing commercial growth as well. Climate The West Shore of Vancouver Island holds some of the world’s most awesome wilderness scenery. The Mediterranean-like climate, with rainfall of about 160 inches a year, allows vegetation to grow lush with ferns, mosses, and shrubbery growing beneath tall evergreen trees. It is logging country, but a lot of the wilderness has been left nearly untouched, giving a sense of the virgin forests that once covered the entire island. Things to Do There are many bays, lakes, and rivers scattered throughout the inland regions. It’s a recreational wonderland, waiting to be explored. The area offers extensive opportunities for sightseeing, recreational activities like golfing, angling, birdwatching, swimming, hiking and kayaking. There are lodges, restaurants, shopping, historical tours, and more. Education School District 62 (Sooke) provides education to the 8,200 students in the West Shore area. The district has 19 elementary schools, 3 Middle schools, 3 Secondary schools, and 2 Alternate schools, as well as an Adult Education program. School sizes range from a low of 16 to high of 1400 students. The focus of the District is to improve student achievement in the areas of literacy and numeracy. West Shore Real Estate WestShore real estate includes a prestigious new resort and condo development at Bear Mountain. It is a Whistler-esque community which features a golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus. The City of Colwood is becoming the preferred place to live in WestShore because of the many choices of housing types. One reason is that it is close to shopping and commercial areas. View Royal is more commercial, but is conveniently located for easy access to Victoria and Vancouver. View Royal homes are located in seven districts which are identified by topography, population, and amount of available land for development. Which of the West Shore locations is right for you?
