History
In 1778 Captain James Cook, R.N. became the first European to set foot in what is now British Columbia. The earliest days of Victoria were dominated by the fur trading business. However, in 1843, the area became a permanent British settlement when the Hudson Bay Company moved its fort from Vancouver and renamed the area Fort Victoria in the honor of Her Majesty. By 1858, fur-trading gave way to the gold rush as the primary draw for new residents numbering approximately 450 people at the time gold was discovered. Within a few short weeks, the population grew to over 20,000, most of whom lived in a “city of tents”. This influx of gold-seekers also created a land rush in Victoria. City lots which often couldn’t bring $25 price were being grabbed up at rate of $3,000 each. The city was actually incorporated and platted in 1862. By the twentieth century, Victoria saw additional growth with the establishment of a naval base and new industries such as ship-building, machine manufacturing, forestry, fishing, and institutions of higher education coming into the area. Demographics Today Victoria has a regional population of over 326,000 people who enjoy a moderate, sub-Mediterranean climate which offers almost 2,200 hours of sunshine each year with flowers blooming year-round. Spring arrives as early as February. Summer is comfortable with low humidity and nearly constant offshore breezes and temperatures ranging from 18 to 32 degrees C (65 to 90 degrees F). Fall arrives late in September with trees turning to lovely shades of gold. Winters are so mild that lawns and golf courses remain green and lush.
