About Sidney, BC
Sidney is located on the Saanich Penninsula of Vancouver Island, about 20 kilometres north of Victoria. Sidney is surrounded on three sides by North Saanich, and is the focus of the residential real estate market since North Saanich is primarily an agricultural region. Incorporated as a village in 1952, Sidney has experienced steady growth and currently has more than 11,000 residents. It is the primary business hub for the Penninsula. Some of the industries are tourism, marine and retail, as well as a growing hi-tech industry. One of the features of the town is Sidney by the Sea which has a thriving mixture of retail and professional services available. Several of the town's businesses and organizations have joined together to ensure that it remains a friendly, small town full of character and charm. Things to Do Sidney offers many of the amenities common to big cities. It offers its own culture and entertainment with the Star Theatre which features first-run movies, and the Mary Winspear Centre which has a multi-purpose theatre for stage productions as well as meeting rooms for conventions and special meetings. Being a pedestrian friendly town, downtown specialty shops, stores, and services are easily accessible and conveniently located. Restaurants in Sidney offer a wide variety of cuisines catering to all preferences. As a year-round tourist spot, the 3.6 kilometres of waterfront offer many exciting activities to enjoy, including whale watching, exploring the ocean’s mysteries at the Ocean Discovery Centre, learning about the area at the Historical Museum, as well as fishing, diving, boating, sailing, and kayaking. Education Within the town of Sidney are two public elementary schools, one public middle school which are part of the Saanich School District No. 63 (SSD No. 63), and an independent Montessori School. High school students attend either Parklands High School in North Saanich or Stellys in Central Saanich. The vision of SSD No. 63 is to develop a partnership between students, parents, schools and community that creates a society that is inclusive, honouring, and respectful. The District wants to provide an education that is relevant, to encourage constant learning that is innovative, and to build upon student strengths. Sidney, Real Estate Sidney Real Estate has a good mixture of types of affordable housing available, including single detached units. Until 1996, the area had a lower number of single detached and apartments than in the surrounding area, but since then, the construction has shifted even more from single, detached homes to duplexes and townhouses. New construction of single detached units is almost non-existant. The reason may be the large population of older residents who are either retiring, downsizing or can no longer live alone. Redevelopment in Sidney is now more mixed use, a combination of residential and commercial use. Whether you're looking for a peaceful retirement home or a place to raise your children, Sidney is certainly worth looking into.
