About Metchosin, BC
Like Oak Bay, the earliest residents of Metchosin were Coast Salish people who enjoyed its wide open spaces, bountiful farmlands, and pastoral countrysides. Originally the area primarily served as a source of agricultural products for the province. It became an incorporated municipality in 1984 as one of the West Shore communities group of municipalities. The West Shore communities also include Langford, Colwood, Highlands, and View Royal -- all of which lie along the shoreline of the Juan de Fuca Strait. Things to Do In the heart of Metchosin is the Village Centre where, at the intersection of Happy Valley Road and Metchosin Road, you will find a restaurant, an old school, and several stores. Though the area is not marshy, there are many migratory birds that make a stop-over at Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park as well as the other parks in the area, the Albert Head Lagoon and Devonian Regional Park. All of the parks provide an occasional sighting of wildlife enjoying the coastal setting. In Metoschin, the St. Mary’s Heritage Churchyard reveals the historical names of the early family names who settled in the area. And from September to May, monthly concerts are also held at the church. The Pioneer Museum on the municipal grounds offers even more historic information about the early settlers and the agricultural history of the area. Golfers will enjoy the course choices of the area which include the Metchosin Golf Course and Olympic View Golf Club, not to mention the 8 championship courses that are nearby. Equestrians can enjoy their sport at several horseriding clubs in Metchosin. And whether it’s hiking, roller blading, cycling, or just a leisurely stroll that you enjoy, the Galloping Goose Trail is where it’s happening. This 100 km multi-use trail links the communities of Colwood, Langford, Metchosin, Sooke, and View Royal. Education Metchosin, once its own School District before the creation of the province of British Columbia, is now a part of the School District 62 Sooke which provides education to the West Shore communities’ 8,200 students. Its focus is on enabling all students to achieve their full potential, to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes they will need to contribute to a healthier society and a sound economy in the future. In addition to the public schools, West Mont private school provides education for preschool and kindergarten to Grade 9. Metchosin Real Estate Metchosin real estate includes plenty of available options such as condos on the ocean, wooded acreage, rolling ranch or farmland, waterfront and oceanview homes, as well as commercial, industrial and investment properties.
