About Malahat, BC
Named for the First Nation Malahat people, this rugged region is heavily forested and features steep cliffs. It also is home to one of the most traversed, yet beautiful roadways found anywhere in the world. It was originally blazed as a cattle trail in 1861 and upgraded for wagon travel in 1884, finally becoming a paved road in 1911. The Malahat people used the caves in this rugged country for spiritual purposes. Therefore, this mountain is considered to be one of the most sacred of sites on Southern Vancouver Island. When you travel north from Victoria, Malahat Drive climbs through dense natural forests and rugged terrain before it drops into the Cowichan Valley. Along the way are several pull-off points where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Saanich Peninsula, the Gulf Islands, and even Mount Baker in Washington State. Things to do Goldstream Provincial Park, a premier provincial park at the southern edge of the Malahat, is a favourite of campers especially during November’s salmon run. The natural beauty of the park makes it a special place to spend time leisurely strolling through an old-growth rain forest. The Aeerie Resort overlooks Spectacle Lake. Its luxurious Mediterranean styling and the fabulous views makes this inn one of the romantic places in the world! Spectacle Lake Provincial Park is a great place to enjoy swimming, canoeing, or fishing for eastern brook trout. In fact, it’s the only place on Vancouver Island which where you can catch these fish. The lake is also stocked with Rainbow trout. An easy 2 km hiking trail encircles the lake. At the northern end of the Malahat Drive, is Bamberton Provincial Park, a quiet retreat with a sandy swimming beach.
