About Colwood, BC Colwood was actually one of the original farms established by the Hudson Bay company back in 1850s to provide the growing population of Fort Victoria with food. Today, it is in the midst of a largely residential part of West Shore communities, and home to more than 15,470 people. Colwood is located west of Victoria, and is surrounded by View Royal to the north, Langford to the west, and Metchosin to the south. The entire area stretches along the shoreline of the Juan de Fuca Strait. Though a young municipality, being incorporated as recently as 1985, Colwood has a rich heritage dating back to the 17th century to which many of the historic landmarks can attest. These landmarks include Hatley Castle and Fisgard Lighthouse. Today, Colwood, which is six miles (10km) from downtown Victoria, is one of the fastest growing municipalities in the greater Victoria area and well known for its variety of recreational opportunities and facilities. Recreation Hatley Park is a 565-acre Edwardian estate, and Canada’s largest National Historic site. In the center is a magnificent castle built in 1908. On the grounds of Hatley Park is a museum and has several gardens. The Park features many programs and seasonal events for visitors to enjoy. It also offers a place to eat at the Habitat Café. Fisgard Lighthouse was the first lighthouse on Canada’s western coast while Vancouver Island was still a colony. The lighthouse still functions as a lighthouse as well as a historical site, guiding vessels toward Victoria Harbour. Golf courses include the Olympic View Golf Club and Royal Colwood Golf Club. Also available is the Bear Mountain Golf and Country Club in nearby Langford, and Victoria is home to eight championship courses as well. The Galloping Goose Trail is the place you want to be if you enjoy cycling, hiking, roller blading, horseback riding, or just taking a leisurely stroll down the multi-use 100-km trail which links the communities of Colwood, Langford, Metchosin, Sooke, and View Royal. Schools Colwood is a part of the School District 62 Sooke. There are four elementary schools located within the municipality: Colwood, John Stubbs (located in Belmont Park), Sangster, and Wishart; and there is also one middle school, Dunsmuir.
