About Central Saanich
The municipality of Central Saanich, which was incorporated in December 1950, is located approximately 13 miles (21 km) north of downtown Victoria. Its population in 2006 was approximately 15,750 people. It is flanked on the west by Saanich Inlet and on the east by Haro Strait. The District of Saanich is to the south, and the District of North Saanich is to the north. The area of the Central Saanich region is rural, with a rich agricultural heritage. About two-thirds of the municipality is farmland located in the Agricultural Land Reserve. Even so, Central Saanich is within easy access to the Victoria International Airport in Victoria, and the terminal at BC Ferries at Swartz Bay. Things to Do The annual Central Saanich Day’s celebration of BC Day is held at Centennial Park the first weekend in August. It is a Central Saanich Lions Club sponsored event that features a pancake breakfast, children’s games, a petting farm, face painting, hayrides, a slow-pitch softball tournament, and much more. There are plenty of hiking trails through lovely landscapes of rolling hills, trails with hedgerows, and quiet roads criss-crossing walking trails which lead to other popular hiking trails. Shoppers will find the Stelly’s Cross Road shopping convenient for their needs. This neighborhood shopping area includes a variety of shops as well as some businesses and light industry. Education Public schools in the Central Saanich area are part of the Saanich School District No. 63 which is actually older than the province itself, and serves the municipalities Saanich, Central Saanich, North Saanich, and the township of Sidney. The District’s Board encourages the schools to focus on creating a learning environment that reflects the values of compassion, being sympathetic and helpful; of honesty and sincerity; of being fair and impartial; of being respectful, considerate, and appreciative; of being responsible, accountable, and reliable. Central Saanich Real Estate Even though primary use of Central Saanich real estate is agricultural, there are also pockets of housing that range from hobby farms to townhouses scattered about. Since the area is primarily farming or rural, there are many small and large farms, and plenty of space for horse lovers, too. In addition, there are also waterfront homes, condos, and single-family homes which add to the diversity of the area. Central Saanich is conveniently located near Victoria and its big city amenities, yet offers the benefits of a high-quality life in a rural community that enjoys a low crime rate – all set in the beautiful surroundings of Vancouver Island.
